Oops

I was getting ready to fry an egg for Laurel this morning when Michael approached and started showing a lot of interest in the egg container. He counted how many eggs were in it (five) and commented on how cold they were. "Great!" I thought, "I'm going to use this moment to teach the kids about eggs!"

So I sat them both down at the table and talked about the eggs. How they were fragile, and white, and smooth. Then I got a plate, broke the egg onto it, and gave them each half of the shell to touch. Course, Michael is allergic to eggs, but I knew with his sensory issues he wasn't going to mess with it too much. And I was right. He basically tentatively held his index finger to the inside of the eggshell for about .17 seconds and then quickly wiped his finger on his jammies to erase the wetness.

I then tossed the science lesson in the garbage disposal and fried Laurel an egg. She ate it, and we went about our morning like usual. About thirty minutes later the kids started fighting over a toy and I went to intervene. That's when I saw Michael was hunkered down and rubbing his eye like he was trying to claw it out. I pulled his arms away from his face and realized it was COVERED IN HIVES. And his left eye was SWOLLEN HALF WAY SHUT.

For a minute I couldn't figure out what had caused it. Could the cat have dragged in a germ? Did Michael find an especially dusty area of the carpet? I thought of the egg, but I know it didn't go anywhere near his mouth. Could the microscopic bit of residual egg left on his finger after he rubbed it on his jammies actually cause him to have this sort of reaction?

I guess so.

I quickly grabbed Michael and washed his hands and face with soap. I was out of Children's Benadryl, so there wasn't much I could do other than wait and see if it improved. He did pretty much stop rubbing his eye, and the hives faded within half an hour. It has now been about a ninety minutes since I first discovered him, and there isn't any redness on his face anymore. His eye is still pretty swollen though. Poor kid. It sucks when your mother is a moron.

Here's a pic from a few minutes ago (I didn't think to take one when he was really bad). You can still see the hives and swelling though.

Oh man, poor guy!!! Eggs are delicious! And in so many things. I would have never thought touching an egg shell for just a moment could cause such a reaction. You live and you learn.

You're not allowed to run out of Benadryl! Your kids must have bad allergies if you actually run out:-( (Most of us have the opened bottle that gets thrown away when it expires long before it's actually used up.) Sounds like you've become a diet detective. Time consuming...but it'll be worth it. Keep your chin up!
